Psicologilondra’s tests: 15 questions to help you find out if there is a problem.
This test does not have any diagnostic value and thus cannot be used instead of the opinion of an expert.
Read the questions carefully and answer sincerely.
This questionnaire is intended to be filled in by the parents or guardians of a child.
Carefully read the following descriptions of some of the typical behaviours and reflect on whether the child acts very often in these particular ways (and not just sometimes).
Take note of which sentences describe the child (Yes) and which ones do not (No).
- The child struggles to pay attention to details: e.g. he/she cannot complete games like “spot the differences.”
- It is really difficult for the child to pay attention to something for a long period of time (but be aware that for a 7 years old child, forty-five minutes of homework is hard work!)
- The child is too talkative and he cannot wait for his turn to speak.
- If he/she is doing homework or is playing a quiet game, everything around is a wonderful source of distraction (even familiar objects).
- The child avoids not only homework, but also games that require high levels of concentration (like playing cards, reading a story…)
- It is really difficult for the child to organize his/her activities: e.g. if he/she has to do his/her geometry homework, he/she cannot remember which is the right exercise book, he/she forgets his/her pencil, after ten minutes he/she realizes that he/she needs a ruler…
- It is really difficult to complete time consuming tasks: e.g. colour big drawings, write an essay, do numeric series…
- The child cannot wait for his/her turn during games and cannot follow complicated rules.
- The child needs to stand up every five minutes, cannot stay on his chair quietly and needs to move continuously.
- The child appears to have his/her head “in the clouds”.
- The child changes games very often (even if he/she appears to be very interested and enthusiastic, his/her attention is caught by something different after a short while).
- The child often answers a question too early, or answers randomly; he/she does not allow others to finish talking.
- The child’s behaviour is worst when there are few rules, when there is lack of adult supervision or when the environment he/she is in has nothing new or exciting.
- The child finds it difficult to express his/her emotions,
- She/he is often frustrated or angry and could even become aggressive.
If you have answer “Yes” less to 6 questions, the problem does not appear to be the Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder.
The difficulties of the child might be due to a different problem.
If you find that 6 or more sentences fit the description of the child, we ask you to answer three more questions:
- School marks are poor, the teachers complain about the behaviour of the child and/or the child does not have many friends.
- Managing the behaviour of the child is a challenge, not only at home or at school, but at the restaurant, at relatives’ house, on holiday etc.
- Most of these behaviours were present before the child was 7 years old.
If you have answered “No” to one of these questions, the problem may be less serious. This does not mean that the child is not experiencing a hard situation, but that the difficulties he/she is experiencing might be not severe enough to cause immediate alarm.
If you have answered “Yes” to all this three questions, it might be good to ask for the opinion of a specialist.
